Ranking the Best Pictures of the 1940s

The Oscar-winning pictures of the 40s proved to be a very different lot than those of the 30s.

Filmmaking is evolving. Story-telling is becoming more complex and as America went through World War II the films celebrated went right along with it.

This is a group of some very good films which are about to be arbitrarily ranked by me whether they like it or not.

Here is my ranking of the best picture winners of the 1940s.

  1. Casablanca (1943)
  2. Rebecca (1940)
  3. Miniver (1942)
  4. The Lost Weekend (1945)
  5. Gentleman’s Agreement (1947)
  6. All the Kings Men (1949)
  7. Hamlet (1948)
  8. How Green Was My Valley (1941)
  9. Going My Way (1944)
  10. The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)
