Predicting the Nominees

The Oscar nominations will be announced tomorrow morning and thus begin the final march towards the film industry’s top prize. What I love about the Oscars is it is truly an industry award. It isn’t film critics or the people’s choice. It’s film makers awarding their fellow film makers. If I were a film maker that would be the most meaningful kind of award. It would be like if you were a plumber and all the other plumbers got together and said that you were the best at fixing sinks. That would be pretty cool. So, without further ado here are my predictions for who will be nominated for Best Sink Fixers.

  • Big Hero 6
  • How to Train Your Dragon 2
  • The Lego Movie

I think there are only 2 legitimate contenders in this category but they’ll at least include How to Train Your Dragon 2 to get the list up to 3.

DON’T BE SURPRISED IF… They nominate 5 films and include The Book of Life and Boxtrolls.

  • J.K. Simmons (Whiplash)
  • Ethan Hawke (Boyhood)
  • Edward Norton (Birdman)
  • Mark Ruffalo (Foxcatcher)
  • Robert Duvall (The Judge)

This list is practically set in stone. However…

DON’T BE SURPRISED IF…  Josh Brolin gets nominated for Inherent Vice instead of Mark Ruffalo. Channing Tatum probably won’t garner enough votes to get in (sadly) but enough to boot his co-star.

  • Meryl Streep (Into the Woods)
  • Patricia Arquette (Boyhood)
  • Emma Stone (Birdman)
  • Keira Knightley (The Imitation Game)
  • Naomi Watts (St. Vincent)

If the supporting actor category is practically set in stone, this one is even more so.

DON’T BE SURPRISED IF… Carrie Coon sneaks in for Gone Girl in place of Naomi Watts. She’s more deserving of a nomination anyway. Or Jessica Chastain for A Most Violent Year.

  • Gone Girl
  • The Imitation Game
  • Unbroken
  • The Theory of Everything
  • Inherent Vice

American Sniper and Whiplash have been picking up a lot of steam and either one could boot Unbroken.

DON’T BE SURPRISED IF… Guardians of the Galaxy gets a nod. Seriously.

  • Birdman
  • Boyhood
  • Foxcatcher
  • Mr. Turner
  • The Grand Budapest Hotel

There are probably 8 really solid screenplays that could get nominated this year including Interstellar and A Most Violent Year.

DON’T BE SURPRISED IF… Nightcrawler jumps up and grabs one of these spots.

  • Reese Witherspoon (Wild)
  • Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl)
  • Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything)
  • Julianne Moore (Still Alice)
  • Jennifer Anniston (Cake)

Amy Adams (Big Eyes) has a chance in this category as well.

DON’T BE SURPRISED IF… They go with Emily Blunt (Into the Woods) in place of Felicity Jones.

  • Steve Carell (Foxcatcher)
  • Michael Keaton (Birdman)
  • Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game)
  • Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything)
  • Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler)

Oscar Isaac (A Most Violent Year), Joaquin Phoenix (Inherent Vice) and Timothy Spall (Mr. Turner) are also in the mix.

DON’T BE SURPRISED IF… Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) gets nominated for the 3rd year in a row.

  • Richard Linklater – Boyhood
  • Wes Anderson – The Grand Budapest Hotel
  • Alejandro Iñárritu – Birdman
  • Clint Eastwood – American Sniper
  • Morten Tyldum – The Imitation Game

A lot of strong work this year will most likely keep Angelina Jolie (Unbroken) and even heavyweights like David Fincher (Gone Girl) and Christopher Nolen (Interstellar) on the sideline.

DON’T BE SURPRISED IF… Foxcatcher director Bennett Miller snatches Clint’s spot.

  • American Sniper
  • Birdman
  • Boyhood
  • Foxcatcher
  • Gone Girl
  • The Grand Budapest Hotel
  • The Imitation Game
  • Nightcrawler
  • The Theory of Everything
  • Whiplash

It all depends on how many pictures they nominate. It could be as few as 5 or as many as 10. Unbroken and Interstellar are probably the most likely runners up.

DON’T BE SURPRISED IF… A Most Violent Year makes the cut.

After months of research, tracking and screenings I’m excited to see what tomorrow brings. As always, feel free to share your take. @CMSelby is the place.
